16 from Gujarat clear UPSC, top ranker Atul Tyagi bags 145th spot

Faring better than the previous year, 16 candidates from Gujarat cleared the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination, the results of which were declared on Tuesday. In 2021-22, six candidates from the state had cleared UPSC.

Though none made it to the top 100 list, the top ranker from Gujarat is Atul Tyagi, who bagged the 145th spot with English literature as his optional subject. Some of the other selected candidates are Utsav Jogani (712th rank), Nayan Solanki (869th rank) and Chintan Dudhela (914th rank).

Among the 16, two are women. While Mansi R Meena bagged the 738th rank, Bhavanaben Vadher’s rank was 904.

Dushyant Bheda (30) from Rajkot cleared the exam in his first attempt, securing 262th rank. A mechanical engineer who has a MBA degree from the Indian Institute of Management in Kozhikode, Dushyant has been working in the banking sector in Mumbai and Pune.

“I feel content… had prepared for UPSC for the last one year,” he said. Taking inspiration from his brother, IPS officer Vivek Bheda, who bagged the 465th rank in UPSC in 2020, Dushyant hopes to get IAS cadre. Vivek is currently under probation in Mehsana.

Another engineer, 26-year-old Chandresh Shankhala, ranked 414th from Gaduli village in Kutch district’s Lakhpat taluka. He had completed his mechanical engineering from Government Engineering College in Bhuj.

Currently working as assistant director (news) in Ahmedabad Akashwani under the Indian Information Service, which he joined in 2020, this is Chandresh’s fifth attempt. Son of farmer Dhanjibhai Shankhala, Chandresh’s brother Vijay Patel is a police sub-inspector posted in the Chief Minister’s security convoy in Gandhinagar.

Married for two years, Chandresh’s wife Bhumika Shankhala is a deputy tehsildar posted in Jamnagar. Chandresh, who opted for political science and international relations as optional subject, said he would be sitting for the exam again.

From Gujarat, of the 180 candidates who had cleared the preliminary examination, 30 cleared the mains exam. Of the 16 candidates who cleared UPSC, four are in the provisional list, Sardar Patel Institute of Public Administration in Ahmedabad said.
